Ornament for a woman's dress

Summary:
NMAI collection, 4/7497
Cultural Narrative:

These strung shells were collected by Leo J. Frachtenberg, who was a lingust who stayed at Siletz various times in the early 1900s, collecting stories in several of the many languages spoken by our people. Part of that work was Alsea Texts and Myths, which he worked on with William Smith and Thomas Jackson. Since he labeled this object Alsea, it is likely that he bought it from a member of one of those two families.
