Basket, Hamper

Description: 

Utility basket with English randing, made by Maggie Fern. Three-strand twining at the turn up. Base and lid are plain twined. Large trac border with a braided follow-on. Two wrapped handles. String and wire repairs. Start is four over four and five over five on lid. Rim is a double braid. Basket is of natural colors, with three possible color bands. Original accession record reads: "68-86 Basket. Large basket with cover and side handles. Siletz. Hamper trade basket - B. Higbee (...) Basket woven by Maggie Fern wife of Jake Fern, one of the last of Umpqua Indians. They lived in Scotts Valley near Yoncolla, Ore. and are buried there be their sons Jake and Sam. Basket woven in 1912." (Jake Fern/Fearn was the son of Chief Halo of the Yoncalla. His wife was likely Mary (not Maggie) of the Umpqua who lived 1850's to 1914.)
