Basket, Berry Cup

Made by Jennie Michelle, also known as Tsin-is-tum. Full turn (wrapped) twining, Z-twist. Design is two horizontal bands of three zigzag lines each, and a band at the rim with dog or wolf motif . Cattail warps. The brown and black are sea grass, white is bear grass. One row of three-strand twining at the turn-up. The start is a wrapped bundle, with full turn (wrapped) twining from the beginning. Rim is a vertical braid. From collector's journal: "Clatsop Orgn. Berry cup/When on a visit to Clatsop/ July 1896/These were all bought about the first July when on a visit to Clatsop. We went with Mr. and Mrs. Bancroft. No. 20 was made by Old Mrs Michell an ancient squaw over if not the last of the Clatsop Tribe. The ( ... ) of No. 20 was probably from the Oregon Grape root." Old tag "20-July 1896 Clatsop Berry cup."
