Basket

Description:

Plain twining, Z-twist. Rightward work direction, outside work face. Spruce root warp and weft; some irregular mud-dyed spruce root. Start is a single wrapped bundle. One row of three-strand twining at the turn up, and one row below rim, both Z-twist. Design in one face overlay in white bear grass, with occasional full turn overlay, probably to conserve material. Rim is Z-twist vertical braid, three-strand, twined down to the inside with the last row of twining.

Design is uncommon for Northwest Oregon, and more common in Southwest Oregon; it may have been copied by a North or Central Coast (to the Siuslaw River) weaver from a South Coast basket at the Reservation. Roughly twined, possibly by an elder weaver.
