Basket

Description:

Plain twining, S-twist. Warps are irregular split and whole hazel sticks mixed with some spruce root. Start is two over two crossed and wrapped spruce roots, consistent with this region. Weft is spruce root. Mostly closed twining, with some bands of open crossed warps below rim. Four rough design bands with two to four rows of bear grass overlay in each band. Mud-dyed root overlay in top two bands. Decorative floating element is a diagonal line that spirals around the basket (very typical of South Coast and Siuslaw area basketry). Rim warps folded to side, above this two to three rows of twining, wrapped with spruce root. Handle is forked at one end, not braided, wrapped with spruce root and cotton string; repaired.

Likely made at Siletz in pre-reservation or early reservation era. See also 1-9800; same region, same materials, possibly same weaver.
