Basket, Cylindrical Twined Bag

Description:

"Sally" bag. Plain twining, Z-twist, rightward work direction, outside work face. Original warps are willow bark. Original weft at start was jute twine, then transitions to willow bark. Zigzag design band is corn husk in wrapped twined overlay over plain twining. Base has an indigenous repair done with dogbane, possibly milkweed, and a very small amount of commercial cotton thread. There are multiple small repairs in corn husk, possibly non-indigenous or by second weave: three stitches of false embroidery after the turn-up, five to six stitches where the wrapped corn husk element is on the wrong side (inside), and several others. There are two small spots of red wool in wrapped twined overlay, more likely design elements than repairs. Rim was likely bound with black wool fabric, now missing. Top half of basket looks like work of a different weaver in a different batch of willow bark, and top third of willow bark is S- and Z-corded, while lower willow bark is not corded. Old commercial linen string acoss top of basket.

Old tage says "1903 221." Original collector's journal reads "Umatilla, 9d, bag. Old."
