Basket, Berry Cup

Made by Jennie Michelle, also known as Tsin-is-tum. Full turn (wrapped) twining, Z-twist. Cattail warps, yellow dyed and undyed bear grass wefts. Start: Bundle wrapped with wool. Three horizontal decorative bands of cream, gold, and dark brown. Two bands have a geometric motif, top band has dog motif. Design weft is blue wool, bear grass, and sea grass. Rim is vertical braid. From collector's journal: "Clatsop Orgn. Berry cup/When on a visit to Clatsop/ July 1896/These were all bought about the first July when on a visit to Clatsop. We went with Mr. and Mrs. Bancroft. No. 20 was made by Old Mrs Michell an ancient squaw over if not the last of the Clatsop Tribe. The ( ... ) of No. 20 was probably from the Oregon Grape root."
